Nonsurgical vs Surgical procedures

Nonsurgical vs Surgical Procedures: What’s the Difference?

Plastic Surgery / January 6, 2022

The board-certified plastic surgeons at Plastic Surgery Associates of Santa Rosa perform surgical beauty treatments for patients from Northern California and beyond. Plastic surgery supports and is supported by nonsurgical beauty treatments like those offered at our Allegro Medspa of Santa Rosa. We hear a lot of commentary on nonsurgical vs surgical procedures and our experts decided to weigh in.

Surgical cosmetic procedures

Plastic surgery aesthetics procedures provide fast, dramatic results for those who seek to enhance their visual harmony. Surgical procedures involve incisions made in the skin, sometimes the removal of skin, and require some form of anesthetic. With plastic surgery we provide permanent augmentation (or reduction) of features like the breasts, butt, nose, lips, cheeks, chin, and jaw.

After surgery you need downtime to heal, and may need some help around the house depending on what procedure you have.

Nonsurgical aesthetic treatments

Nonsurgical aesthetic treatments target many of the same concerns as plastic surgery through less invasive means. Many of the med spa treatments performed at our Allegro Medspa are completely noninvasive. Nonsurgical aesthetic treatments performed at med spas fight aging, improve the tone and texture of the skin, contour the body, and more. We utilize technologies like lasers, radiofrequencies, injectables, and advanced skincare to achieve these goals.

Most nonsurgical treatments won’t require much (if any) downtime but usually take more than one treatment to get the type of results patients tend to look for.

A summary of nonsurgical vs surgical procedures

The biggest difference between surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures is that all surgical procedures require some form of anesthetic and some type of incision into the skin. Nonsurgical procedures can be minimally or noninvasive. Minimally invasive nonsurgical treatments include things like dermal filler or Botox injections and microneedling. Noninvasive treatments include body sculpting and various facials, to name a few.

They achieve many of the same goals, though at different paces and through different means. Med spas’ nonsurgical treatments can kill fat cells, rejuvenate skin from the inside out, and even strengthen muscle. Surgical procedures can create permanent augmentation or reduction of features and offer anti-aging and body sculpting results far more quickly than at a med spa.
