Dr. Canales was born in Mexico, but grew up in Puerto Rico. His mother was Mexican and his father Puerto Rican. Dr. Canales has 2 brothers and one 1 sister. His father was the first in the family to attend college but he died unexpectedly when Dr. Canales was 12 years old. Yes, that’s Dr. Canales, not smiling too much, in the plaid red shirt.
After attending elementary school, middle school, and high school in Puerto Rico, Dr. Canales came to the United States for his college and medical education. Dr. Canales’ native language is Spanish, and he learned English and French fluently in school. He was accepted to Harvard at age 16. At Harvard he was captain of the swim team and graduated with honors. He then attended medical school at both Yale and Stanford. Dr. Canales is the shortest one in his 9th grade class. Dr. Canales and Dr. Furnas were married at Stanford’s Memorial Church, and had two children, Diego and Siena. Even though the kids are all grown up, they still travel as a family!
Dr. Canales proudly represented Puerto Rico in the Montreal Olympics. Can you pick him out in this newspaper feature that, translated, means “Faces that shine in Olympic Montreal?”
Dr. Canales loves his career as a plastic surgeon, but he is most proud of what he has achieved as a husband and father.
