What body part silently expresses speech, kisses loved ones, and contains savory morsels as we chew? Our lips! As Valentine’s Day approaches, people look for ways to plump, smooth, and shape them to give them a boost when facing the world. Fortunately, we have some great options!
The Lip Flip: To create fuller lips in patients who don’t need a lot of volume, the lip flip can be a great option. A small amount of neuromodulator, like Botox© or Dysport©, can be injected in a few select spots: along the lip’s edge at the peaks of the Cupid’s bow, the central lower lip, and near the corners of the mouth.
The circular muscle at the lip’s pink edge relaxes, and the rest of lip rotates out, so the lip looks plumper. This rotation is the “flip.” A lip flip can make an upper lip that disappears with a smile reappear, and it can also minimize a gummy smile (as seen in above photo).
Patients planning a lip flip should avoid aspirin and other blood thinners for at least a week before treatment to avoid bruising. A cold pack held to your lip just before the injection can numb long enough for the quick treatment.
Full muscle relaxation occurs a few days after treatment. Some people may notice their lip muscle is when saying a “p” or a “b” or when sipping through a straw. The effect lasts three or four months, until the next neuromodulator treatment.
BEFORE AND AFTER LIP FILLER
Lip Filler: Hyaluronic acid (HA) is an ideal substance to use as a filler. We produce it naturally in our tissues, and it retains water, so it is ideal for patients wanting more volume. HA products include Juvederm©, Volbella©, Restylane©, and RHA©. Most last six months, with some designed to last a year or longer.
Lip filling is an artistic endeavor, so a good practitioner will study your lips, noting asymmetries and flat surfaces to augment. After numbing with a topical agent, the practitioner injects the clear gel. Most products incorporate an anesthetic agent into the gel for your comfort.
Avoid blood thinners for at least a week before treatment. After treatment, lips can be swollen and sometimes bruised, so allow a week or two before scheduling major events or going on camera.
Lips that are filled to natural proportions may not stand out in a crowd. And that’s a good thing. Overfilling can lead to distracting results.
The VIP Lip: You can flip and fill the lips together. Depending on the shape and volume of your lips, the two treatments may provide the most aesthetic enhancement. Thin lips can rotate outwards with the neuromodulator and plump up with the hyaluronic acid filler.
The VIP Lip treatment can enhance the aging lip by minimizing vertical lines, showing more pink vermilion, increasing lip volume, and improving the down-directed creases in the corners of the mouth.
BEFORE AND AFTER LIP LIFT
The Lip Lift: In some instances, nonsurgical modalities are not enough. As we age, the upper lip can elongate. The pink vermilion of the upper lip can roll inward, offering less show. At the same time, the expanse of skin between nose and pink lip border can lengthen. No neuromodulator or filler can shorten that distance and raise the level of the lip, but a lip lift can!
A lip lift is a surgical procedure that can be performed alone, but it is often performed in combination with eyelid lifts and facelifts. A small incision follows the shadows of the nasal sill, so the scar is well-hidden. Extra skin is removed, and the upper lip is advanced upward and elevated. The result is a shorter, more youthful upper lip with more pink vermilion showing. Patients love the rejuvenated facial proportions, the fuller upper lip, and the improved exposure of the upper teeth. The results hide in plain view because they look so natural.
After a lip lift, patients can still have VIP lip, a lip fill, or a lip flip. Just don’t try to say all that if your lip is numb!
