Just a few weeks ago, Lon, our chief operating officer, graduated with an Executive MBA from Sonoma State University. While working hard for Plastic Surgery Associates and Allegro MedSpa, she pushed herself and opened new horizons by tackling an advanced degree.
My good friend, Marcy Smothers, having had no previous experience as an author, just came out with a wonderful new book, Snacks. (Check it out at www.snacksthebook.com.) She pushed her own personal envelope and knocked it out of the park. I am proud of Lon, Marcy, and other women like them who have broken out of their comfort zones to pursue their goals.
According to Facebook's chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg, women are more likely than men to underestimate themselves. In her new book Lean In, she notes that women's lower self-confidence inhibits them from embarking on difficult pursuits and taking on leadership positions; they pull back when they should be leaning in. Sandberg challenges women to ask themselves, "What would I do if I weren't afraid?" Then she urges, "Go do it."
What does overcoming fear have to do with plastic surgery? Everything. While we love to see the physical transformations our patients undergo after they have a mommy makeover, a liquid lift, or a facelift, what we really love to hear is how those changes impact their lives. The most common comment we hear is, "This has done wonders for my self-esteem."
One of our patients said, "I was never lacking in confidence, but after my breast augmentation, I'm on fire. I say things at meetings I never would have had the guts to say before."
In our experience, plastic surgery is rarely about simple vanity. Instead patients seek help for the distraction of self-consciousness, whether it's from a large nose, a hanging neck, or deflated breasts. Surgery can relieve the back pain and headaches from heavy breasts and the discomfort of tucking in extra tummy skin, which drags down the spirit.
In our experience we have found that plastic surgery, weight loss, and nonsurgical treatments like Botox can help boost confidence and liberate the bravery that many women never knew they had.
