Discover Your Breast Augmentation Choices

Choosing to undergo breast enhancement surgery is a big decision but an exciting time! It’s important to have the support of a dedicated team, and at your first consultation, we will help you explore all the possibilities so that you can make a confident decision. This includes selecting the implants that suit your body size, shape, and aesthetic preferences.

Choosing Your Breast Implant

Implants for breast augmentation are made in various shapes, sizes, profiles, and textures, each considered carefully to reach the patient’s preferred outcome.

Silicone gel implants are chosen more frequently than saline implants because they feel and move more like natural breast tissue. They are also less prone to rippling, which can lead to a smoother and more natural-looking breast appearance. [1]

At Plastic Surgery Associates, we use Sientra silicone gel breast implants. Sientra breast implants are widely considered the gold standard by plastic surgeons today. Sientra implants are made from a highly cohesive silicone gel designed to look and feel natural. They have a unique texture that promotes tissue adherence and helps to prevent implant rotation or displacement. Sientra offers a variety of implant shapes and sizes to fit a range of body types and aesthetic goals. Sientra implants are FDA approved and have an unrivaled safety profile, with some of the lowest complication rates clinically shown through a robust 10-year study. Not only are Sientra implants safe, but they are also backed by their Platinum 20™ year warranty which provides the longest length of coverage, most financial assistance, and least restrictions in the industry. Sientra implants are designed to hold their shape while maintaining a remarkably soft feel. With two surface types, over 340 implant options, and 5 projection levels, Sientra breast implants can help you see the look you’ve always wanted.

Choosing your implant will ultimately depend on personal preference, body type, and aesthetic goals.

Gummy Bear Implants

At Plastic Surgery Associates, we also offer the popular form-stable gummy bear implant. This type of implant comprises a cohesive silicone gel that maintains its shape and has a natural look and feel. The gummy bear implant is designed to resist rupture, leakage, and distortion, and it can offer a long-lasting and satisfying outcome for patients.

How Big To Go: Implant Sizing Guidelines

Breast implant size is distinguished based on the silicone’s cubic centimeters, or CCs. To choose the right volume, we will measure how much natural breast tissue exists and discuss the size you hope to achieve. In the operating room, it is normal for Dr. CanalesDr. Furnas, or Dr. Culbertson to temporarily switch out various implants to understand better the fit that complements the patient’s figure and achieves their expected outcome.

Anatomical or Round: Choosing Your Implant Shape

Choosing between anatomical and round implants is critical to achieving optimal aesthetic outcomes in cosmetic breast augmentation. While anatomical implants were initially developed to provide a more natural breast shape, recent studies have suggested that they do not necessarily offer an aesthetic advantage over round implants. In fact, plastic surgeons have demonstrated difficulty in accurately distinguishing between the two implant shapes in a clinical setting. [2]

All About Implant Projection

Implant profiles are available in various options, from low to high, with each profile corresponding to a different projection level. Low-profile implants have a broader base and are flatter, while high-profile implants have a narrower base and are more projecting. The choice of implant profile depends on the patient’s aesthetic goals, breast anatomy, and chest wall dimensions. Patients who want a more subtle augmentation may opt for a low-profile implant, while those seeking a more dramatic change may choose a high-profile implant.

What is Fat Grafting for Breast Augmentation?

Fat grafting is also called fat transfer. Fat transfer for breast augmentation involves transferring harvested fat from other body areas, such as the abdomen or thighs, to the breasts. The processed fat is strategically distributed throughout the layers of the breast tissue to increase size and shape. This technique offers a natural alternative to traditional breast implants and can be ideal for those looking for a subtle increase in breast size or having concerns about using implants.

We understand all the considerations may be overwhelming, but choosing the appropriate implant is easy once your desires are understood during the consultation. These considerations, coupled with the skill of Dr. CanalesDr. Furnas, and Dr. Culbertson, help to ensure the anticipated outcome is met.

What are the Benefits of Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation can provide several benefits for women who desire to enhance the size and shape of their breasts. The procedure can improve self-confidence and self-image, especially for those who have undergone pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight loss. It can also help balance asymmetrical breasts and improve the overall proportion of the body. In addition, breast augmentation can allow women to wear clothing they previously avoided, leading to a more fulfilling social life.

What’s Involved in a Breast Augmentation?

While breast implants are a desirable improvement for many patients – and it is the fifth most popular procedure according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons [3] – what often stops patients from going under the knife are the potential risks. At Plastic Surgery Associates, we understand our patients’ concerns, so we offer breast augmentation using the most advanced, meticulous surgical techniques and a rapid recovery protocol to decrease the likelihood of any risk.

Keller Funnel

The patient’s chosen implant is inserted through a small incision and placed in a surgically created pocket using a no-touch technique with a Keller Funnel. This sterile, cone-shaped, lubricated device guides the implant into the pocket, reducing the risk of infection and the potential for implant damage. The incision is secured with dissolvable skin sutures after the implant is positioned, eliminating the need for suture removal. As a result, scarring is discreet and fades over time.

Reducing the Risk of Capsular Contracture

Capsular contracture is a common complication following breast implant surgery, often leading to reoperation. The condition, where scar tissue tightens and compresses the implant, causing pain, discomfort, and a distorted appearance, is believed to be caused by several factors, including implant texture, incision type, and pocket contamination. Using a Keller Funnel during surgery reduces implant contact with the skin and ducts, lowering the risk of bacterial contamination and subsequent biofilm formation. One study found that the rate of capsular contracture was reduced by 87% in patients who had breast augmentations with a Keller Funnel compared to those who did not use a Funnel. [4]

Who are the Ideal Candidates?

A Diverse Range of Breast Augmentation Candidates in Northern California

The decision to go through with breast augmentation in Northern California is personal. If you are considering this procedure, you must do it for yourself and no one else. Candidates should be healthy with breasts that are fully developed and be the proper age to have implants. Per FDA guidelines, patients must be 22 years old to undergo augmentation with silicone implants. Many women younger than 22 still choose silicone implants with the full support of their plastic surgeon—though some breast implant manufacturers may void the warranty if the placement occurred before the age of 22.

If you are unhappy with the aesthetics of your chest because they seem flat, you could benefit from this cosmetic breast treatment. Moreover, if your breasts have changed due to

  • Aging
  • Nursing
  • Weight loss

this surgery can give them life with increased shape and fullness. If you engage in weightlifting or have minimal natural breast tissue, breast augmentation can be a favorable choice for achieving beautiful, perky breasts that add dimension to your figure. Your personal treatment plan might include implants, a lift, or both. Breast lift surgery removes loose skin and raises the breasts, while implants enhance the shape and size. Before discussing your treatment options, we will listen to your concerns and goals in your consultation. An augmentation and lift are usually included in a mommy makeover to revitalize the breasts after breastfeeding and pregnancy.

Personal Consultation

During your initial consultation, one of our board-certified plastic surgeons will discuss your goals and expectations for the breast augmentation procedure. They will also evaluate your medical history and examine your breasts to determine if you are a good candidate for the surgery.

You will have the opportunity to view before and after photos of our previous breast augmentation patients, giving you an idea of possible results. Our surgeons will explain the various types of implants available and help you select the right size, shape, and type to achieve your desired outcome. They will also go over the surgical process, including the anesthesia used, the incision site, and any risks or potential complications associated with the procedure.

What to Expect During Breast Augmentation Surgery

Breast augmentation is typically performed outpatient, with patients under light general anesthesia. The selected breast implant is inserted through an incision in the crease underneath the breast; this technique, known as the inframammary incision, allows the surgeon to place the implant properly. There are two common techniques for implant placement:

  • Submuscular placement involves positioning the implant beneath the chest muscle
  • Subglandular placement involves placing the implant beneath the breast tissue but above the muscle

The decision on where to insert the breast implant will depend on several factors, including the patient’s overall implant size and type, body type, and level of physical activity. Our experienced plastic surgeons will carefully evaluate these factors to determine the most appropriate placement and location for the implant.

Once the breast implant has been properly positioned, the incision is carefully closed using dissolvable skin sutures. Inframammary incisions allow minimal scarring to be easily concealed regardless of implant placement. Our top priority is patient safety and optimal aesthetic outcomes tailored to each patient’s needs and goals.

Your Recovery

After the surgery, each patient will be monitored in a private recovery area before discharge. Patients will receive instructions to wear a recovery compression garment followed by a bra to reduce swelling after 48 hours.

Over the next few days, the breasts will look and feel normal as any bruising and swelling slowly subsides and the implants settle into their new position. While patients can usually resume light activities within 7-14 days, strenuous exercise should be avoided for around six weeks.

Your Follow-Up Appointment After Breast Augmentation

Follow-up appointments need to be made at our office in Santa Rosa so we can evaluate your healing and results. Your recovery will be different, depending on how much fat is taken and grafted, but you need to plan to spend a couple of weeks resting and healing.

FAQ

Can I breastfeed with implants?

Breastfeeding after augmentation surgery is usually possible with the right placement and technique. Breastfeeding and pregnancy can affect your results, so waiting until your family is complete to get breast surgery is better.

Can I have my implants removed?

You may want to remove or replace your implants. In revision surgery, your old implants will be either replaced with different implants or removed. If you want to have your implants removed, you might need to have a breast lift because larger implants may stretch your skin.

Do implants cause breast cancer?

The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) is investigating a link between implants and ALCL (anaplastic large cell lymphoma). This isn’t breast cancer but a cancer of the immune system. [5] According to WHO (World Health Organization), implant-related ALCL is rare, and if caught early, it’s highly treatable. [6] We encourage all patients with implants to get frequent screenings for breast cancer. You should contact Plastic Surgery Associates of Santa Rosa for any concerns, like swelling.
