About Nipple Correction
Having a baby and creating a bond through nursing is such a beautiful experience, but it can be really hard on a woman's body. Many mothers experience dramatic changes to the overall shape and projection of their nipples, which can leave them with an unattractive appearance. This tends to cause women to feel self-conscious and depressed about their new body contour. Thanks to board-certified plastic surgeons Drs. Francisco Canales and Heather Furnas, women can attain a pre-pregnancy physique with nipple correction surgery. At Plastic Surgery Associates of Santa Rosa, we offer several options, including areola reduction, nipple reduction, and nipple inversion correction surgery. Call our office in Santa Rosa, CA today to schedule a private consultation to learn how this cosmetic procedure can help you.
Types of Nipple Correction
Enlarged or overly-shaped nipples (also known as nipple hypertrophy) can be caused by genetics, hormone changes, or breastfeeding. A nipple reduction surgery is performed to reduce the size and projection of elongated nipples for a more symmetrical contour. It can also correct nipples that appear too expansive.
On average, about 10% of women have at least one inverted nipple. There are different classifications of this condition as some inverted nipples can be reversible with stimulation, changes in temperature, or suction cups while others cannot. The most common underlying causes of inverted nipples are short ducts and tethering tissues that pull the nipple inward.
The areola is the pigmented area that surrounds the nipple. In some instances, the areola is naturally disproportionate to the nipple or can become too wide or stretched after puberty, breastfeeding, or weight fluctuation. This reduction surgery alters the size of the areola to complement the natural shape of the breast and nipple for a balanced silhouette.
"I’m beyond happy with my experience with Dr. Canales and the staff as Plastic Surgery Associates. I inquired about a procedure (augmentation) soon after their reopening during the pandemic and got nothing short of amazing service. Right away I had Lisa reach out to me and answered everyone of my many questions. She was so helpful and I felt like she really cared and wanted to make the process as easy as possible. Due to Covid, I had a virtual consultation with Dr. Canales to get the ball rolling. It wasn’t just a get on and get off call, he wanted to know details to ensure I was going to get the desired results. Once the decision was made, the staff there (Kelsey, Lisa and Wendy) we’re providing me with all the documentation needed, reaching out to me via phone and their online Klara portal. If I ever had a question, they responded immediately without frustration. They constantly reminded me they want to provide me with the best experience. On surgery day, I felt like I was apart of the family not just a patient. Dr. Canales and my anesthesiologist and those assisting made me feel so at home and not nervous at all. Post surgery, I could not put into words how ecstatic I am with my results. I never imagined my augmentation would look and feel so natural. They are honestly perfect and it’s thanks to the team helping me decide which options would be best. Huge thank you to the team for performing a life changing procedure and treating me with such care along the way!"- R.S. / Yelp / Aug 05, 2020
"I am 48 years old and breast fed both my children for 24 months. I am also a runner and all I can say is that my breasts looked awful. I contacted Plastic Surgery Associates about a breast aug and from start to finish they were so professional and soothing to me. My breasts are incredible and to be honest..... I did not feel much pain after surgery. I have healed fast and now I am running again and feeling more fit than ever."- C.C. / Facebook / Mar 06, 2020
"I can't say enough nice things about my experience at PSA of Santa Rosa. I have wanted to have a breast reduction since my early 20's, but was nervous about having the surgery. I'm now 55 and decided I was ready to do it! I heard great things about PSA of SR and since this was my very first surgery I called for a consult. Everybody in the office was so nice and made me feel comfortable at every visit. I was very nervous the day of surgery, but the staff and Dr. Furnas were wonderful. The surgery went well and my recovery has been awesome! I thought for sure I would have to take pain pills after surgery but I never had to take a single one! And I am very happy with my breast reduction/lift results! I would highly recommend Plastic Surgery Associates of Santa Rosa."- T.K. / Google / Mar 03, 2020
"I had a full tummy tuck done with Dr Conales, if I could give more stars, I would. He and the entire team was so nice and kind from beginning to end. I'm almost 3 months post op and my results are incredible. Thank you guys so much!"- J.S. / Yelp / Mar 01, 2020
"Breast augmentation was something I'd always dreamed of but it also seemed so daunting! I barely had the guts to call Dr. Furnas's office. I was completely blown away at how open and caring they were, even on that first call, and especially the first visit. It was important that I felt safe, listened to, respected, and the whole team just went above and beyond it all. It was neat to find out Dr. Furnas is also an artist! If she had the eye to be an amazing artist then she would see every detail needed to do well with symmetry and surgery. It was also especially important that my plastic surgeon be a woman. Being unconscious for a surgery is scary, and it was a privilege to have an all female team. Surgery was January 2020 and the results are already beyond my very best expectations, I finally feel confident and free in my body. I can wear the tops I always wanted, no more crazy uncomfortable padded push up bras! Who knew silicone could make you feel MORE authentic?"- A.L. / Yelp / Feb 28, 2020
You are an ideal candidate for nipple correction surgery if you are in overall good health, at a stable weight, are not breastfeeding, and are past childbearing. Typically, women wish to address the following:
- Elongated or stretched nipples
- Overly wide nipples
- Inverted nipples
- Reduce the size of the areola
- Correct the projection of the nipple
- Improve the overall shape and size of the nipple
Nipple correction surgery is a cosmetic procedure that is performed on-site in our accredited surgical facility. Generally, the procedure takes about one hour to perform and patients will be free to go home the same day. The technique used to make your nipple correction will depend on the type of surgery you need: nipple reduction, inversion correction, or areola reduction.
A nipple reduction surgery is used to address expanded or misshaped nipples. Drs. Canales and Furnas will carefully place incisions along the natural curves of the nipple and areola to make scarring as inconspicuous as possible. With an elongated profile, a cylinder of skin is removed from around the base of the nipple and then sutured to close the two sides together. A wide nipple is improved by removing a wedge of tissue to create a more symmetrical appearance. The nerves and milk ducts are generally not affected.
With nipple inversion surgery, a retraction suture is used to pull the nipple forward and the milk ducts are cut one at a time to release tension. Since this procedure is very simple, it does not require general anesthesia, but a numbing cream will be used to diminish any discomfort. The result provides a more natural-looking contour.
This procedure will remove a portion of the areola starting from the outer edge to reduce its size. The pigment of the areola can also be corrected with cosmetic ink (or tattooing) to create a circular, natural shape.
What to Expect
Nipple reduction and inversion surgery are considered outpatient procedures. Many patients can return to usual activities and drive themselves home after their procedure. Typically, you can return to work the next day. A nipple protector will be provided to wear under the bra to help aid in optimal healing. This protection should be worn for at least two weeks. Although there will be a noticeable difference, optimal results will occur in the months that follow as the nipples settle into their new position.
With an areola reduction, the recovery will be slightly more extensive. The procedure itself is fairly simple, but following your surgery, you should allow for optimal rest to enable proper healing for the best results. Heavy lifting and strenuous activity should be avoided until Dr. Canales or Dr. Furnas have cleared you for such activity. Typically, a follow-up appointment will be scheduled about a week after your surgery. Concluding results will be seen in the months that follow.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a nipple correction cost?
The cost of a nipple correction surgery will depend on your unique treatment plan. In many cases, patients also opt to combine nipple correction with another cosmetic surgery. During your first visit, we will review your condition and go over your aesthetic goals to create a custom plan. From there, we can discuss costs and payment options.
Can I still breastfeed after a nipple correction surgery?
Most likely, yes. However, this is not guaranteed, which is why we recommend you be past childbearing and breastfeeding prior to undergoing this surgery. We will do our best to conserve the milk ducts during this process, but it's important to have realistic expectations and to understand that you may not be able to breastfeed.
Will I lose the sensation of the nipple after a nipple reduction?
Since the sensory nerves are not at a superficial level where the incisions will be made, physical sensation is usually not a problem after nipple reduction. However, some patients may experience loss of sensation, which is why it's important to review all the pros and cons prior to surgery.
Can I have a nipple repair at the same time as a breast lift or breast augmentation?
Yes. Many of our patients decide to have a breast augmentation or breast lift with their nipple correction surgery. This enables them to attain the specific outcome they desire.
