About Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation surgery is a procedure that adds volume to breasts to result in a fuller look. It is generally known to be one of the most common cosmetic surgeries, providing women who dislike their breast size effective opportunities for improvement. With the help of implants or fat from the patient's body, this enhancement surgery improves breast shape and size, and it results in a gorgeous and youthful outcome. Santa Rosa, CA plastic surgeons Drs. Francisco Canales and Heather Furnas are experienced in implementing this treatment and perform numerous breast augmentations every year. When you have your consultation at Plastic Surgery Associates of Santa Rosa, we will assess your aesthetic desires and concerns, and we will inform you of all of the choices available while also customizing a treatment plan to exceed your personal goals.
During your initial consult, the appropriate implant will be selected based on your body size and shape, as well as your desired outcome. Implants for augmentation are made in an assortment of shapes, sizes, profiles, and textures — each of which is considered carefully in order to reach the wanted outcome. Still, the most commonly used implant types are silicone or saline, both widely popular and approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). An important fact is that women considering implants made with saline must be at least 18 years old while patients must be a minimum of 22 years old in order to undergo treatment with silicone. Other considerations include a form-stable implant known as a gummy bear implant and fat grafting (known as a fat transfer). In addition to the type of implant used, there are other distinct factors to decide.
Breast implant size is distinguished based on the cubic centimeters (CCs) of saline or silicone used. To choose the right volume, we will measure how much native breast tissue exists and the size you hope to achieve. In the operating room, it is normal for Dr. Canales or Dr. Furnas to temporarily switch out various implants to get a better idea on a suitable fit.
Implants come in either a teardrop or round shape. Both of these shapes are widely used; however, most of our patients choose a round implant. It generally looks and feels more natural while adding fullness to the top of the breast that many patients look for.
Implant profile equates to how far out the implant looks (projection). In other words, this is what is visible from the side angle. Most projections include low to extra high ranges.
Making Your Choices
We understand all of the considerations may be overwhelming, but choosing the appropriate implant is somewhat easy once the patient's desires are understood during the consultation. These considerations, coupled with the skill of Dr. Canales and Dr. Furnas, help to ensure the anticipated outcome is met.
Breast Augmentation Reviews
"There were quite a few factors I looked at when choosing a surgeon for my breast augmentation. First, I wanted a surgeon with great reviews. The reviews on Dr Canales are stellar. In fact, he has preformed procedures on two of my family members too. They all give him raving reviews. He's personable, listens to your concerns, answers all questions, sets realistic expectations, and he helped steer me in the right direction for size. The second factor was the facility. The Plastic Surgery Associates facility is wonderful. There is a discreet exit for patients leaving as well. A third factor was the staff. Every one of the employees has been amazing. They always have a smile on their faces and love to share their stories. Lastly, I am from the East Bay and convenience was a major factor. I was able to submit photos online to determine if I was a good candidate and submit more photos if I had any questions. Dr Canales was very quick with response time and I never waited more than a few minutes in the waiting room. Needless to say, I am thrilled with my results! The only question I have is: Why didn't I do this sooner? Thank you to Dr Canales and his wonderful staff! L"- S.S. / Yelp / Oct 28, 2011
"I cannot say enough great things about my experience with Dr. Canales! From my initial consult to my surgery I felt confident in my choice of doctor. I'm an open heart surgery patient and I wanted Breast augmentation. This required clearance from my cardiologist and copies of my previous EKG and echocardiograms. Dr. Canales was extremely knowledgeable which put my mind at ease. His nurse Brenda is the sweetest and his anesthesiologist listened to me when I informed him of my severe needle phobia (he made sure I was distracted and the IV itself was the quickest/least painful one I've ever gotten). The woman who initially helped me and booked my appointment (Abby) was just lovely. I'm only one day post op and I'm already so happy. It was completely worth the 4.5 hour drive :) Sequoia Star"- K.S. / Yelp / Jul 22, 2015

I will definitely go back if needed for future procedures. Recently visited for a mixer he was hosting and he is so humble and respectful!"- V.F. / Yelp / Aug 17, 2017
"I am so happy i came across Dr.Canales. For the longest time i have been wanting to have a breast augmentation, but scared that i would be a botched case. So i took the time to go to many consultations and then my consult with Dr. Canales came, he made me feel so comfortable and even showed me pictures of what my body type could look like, extremely friendly! Also explained all my options so really i didn't have any questions. Day of surgery went smooth, the staff is so amazing very comforting and the anesthesiologist explained his part and also made the prepping so great. surgery went smooth and pretty quick. i am 100 so happy that he was my surgeons. my results OMG are great, even though i went pretty big 600 cc they look nature and feel so soft. thank you for the surgeon and the great staff."- Y.A. / Yelp / Sep 09, 2016
"DYNAMIC DUO!! I was referred to Dr. Canales from literally everyone in Sonoma County that already had a breast aug. My sister and I went together for our initial consult and we both left feeling very confident he was the Dr. for us. We both got our surgery done on the same day and loved our results! We both felt that he listened to exactly what we wanted and also gave us the right input and direction. Fast forward my life 11 years & 3 breast fed babies later, I now had saggy, separated, HUGE breasts that laid in my armpits! I needed a mommy makeover on them in a bad way! So of course I went back to Dr. Canales, he greeted me like family, we consulted and I booked my surgery. I wanted a smaller more narrow look, no armpit boob and natural looking (basically a miracle)! Dr. Canales and Dr. Furnas are amazing along with everyone else that helped to prep and take care of me! Now 3 weeks postop they're exactly what I wanted; reduced, lifted and a new smaller implant. I would recommend this office to anyone and everyone and can honestly say every single one of my friends that I have referred to his office has been just as happy with there results."- J.C. / Yelp / Jun 28, 2017
The decision to go through with breast augmentation surgery is personal. If you are thinking about having this procedure, it is essential you do it for yourself and nobody else. You should be healthy with breasts that are fully developed and be the proper age to have implants. If you are unhappy with the aesthetics of your chest because they seem flat, you could benefit from this cosmetic breast treatment. Moreover, if your breasts have changed due to aging, nursing, or weight loss, this surgery can give them life with increased shape and fullness. It is a welcomed option if you work out with weights or have little to no original breast mass.
Incision placement, as well as implant location, are factors that are generally made ahead of surgery. During breast augmentation, the chosen incision is created, and then the appropriate breast implant will be placed into its position. There are two techniques that may be chosen for implant placement. These are either under the pectoral muscle or behind the breast tissue but over the pectoral muscle. Where to insert the breast implant depends on varying factors, including the overall type and size of the implant along with the expertise of our plastic surgeons. No matter where the incision is placed, scarring is usually minimal. Placement and location are based upon your implant size, activity level, and body type.
What to Expect
Breast augmentation is an outpatient procedure with the patient under general anesthesia. Following the incision, the chosen implant will be moved through the incision opening and deposited into a surgically created pocket, and then secured into its correct position. Once the implant is in position, the incision is carefully secured with skin adhesives or sutures. Each patient will be taken to a private recovery space and monitored prior to being released. You will be instructed to continue wearing a recovery compression bra to help reduce swelling. Several days after surgery, the bruising and swelling will begin to slowly go away, and the breasts will start to look and feel normal as they fall into their new position. Most patients can engage in everyday activities within a few days; however, physical exertion, such as exercise, should be delayed for approximately a couple of months. Breast augmentation surgery results in gorgeous outcomes that feel and appear both normal and natural. This procedure oftentimes can be a life changer for many women, offering them the opportunity to feel more comfortable in their own skin.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much will my breast augmentation cost?
A variety of factors can affect the total cost of a breast augmentation procedure. These include the type of implant (saline or silicone, textured or smooth, round or anatomical), incisions site and the complexity of the surgery. At Plastic Surgery Associates, a breast augmentation with saline or silicone implants will generally cost between $7,000 and $9,000. This price includes the surgeon’s fee, anesthesiologist’s fee, cost of the surgical center, the breast implants, and all follow-up appointments. You will be only be responsible for the cost of prescriptions, transportation, and any optional at-home supplies like compression garments. During your consultation at Plastic Surgery Associates, Dr. Furnas and Dr. Canales will determine the exact cost of your breast augmentation procedure. Our goal is to make your breast augmentation as easy and affordable as possible, so during this visit, our patient coordinator will go over all of your payment options, including how to apply for medical financing through CareCredit, if needed. Dr. Furnas and Dr. Canales have performed over 5,000 breast augmentations and they use a rapid recovery method of breast augmentation. All of us at Plastic Surgery Associates look forward to your visit.
Do I need a breast lift or augmentation?
Your plan might include implants, a lift, or both. Breast lift surgery removes loose skin and raises the breasts while implants enhance the shape and size. In your consultation, we will listen to your concerns and goals before discussing your treatment options. An augmentation and lift are usually included in a mommy makeover to revitalize the breasts after breastfeeding and pregnancy.
Can I breastfeed with implants?
If you want to breastfeed after augmentation surgery, talk to Dr. Canales or Dr. Furnas during your consultation. It's usually possible to breastfeed after augmentation surgery with the right placement and technique. Breastfeeding and pregnancy can affect your results, which is why it is better to wait until your family is complete to get breast surgery.
Can I have my implants removed?
You might decide that you would like to remove or replace your implants. Should this happen, Plastic Surgery Associates of Santa Rosa offers breast revision surgery. In revision surgery, your old implants will be either replaced with different implants or removed. If you want to have your implants removed, you might need to have a breast lift because larger implants may stretch your skin. For any concerns or questions after your augmentation surgery, schedule a consultation at Plastic Surgery Associates of Santa Rosa to learn more about your options.
Do implants cause breast cancer?
The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) is investigating a link between implants and ALCL (anaplastic large cell lymphoma). This isn't breast cancer, but it is a cancer of the immune system. According to WHO (World Health Organization), implant-related ALCL is very rare, and if caught early, it's highly treatable. We encourage all patients with implants to get frequent screenings for breast cancer. You should contact Plastic Surgery Associates of Santa Rosa if you see any concerns, like swelling.
