How it works

Surgical Technique

Discover the techniques we use to help our clients find relief with a breast reduction in Northern California.

Surgical breast reduction is an outpatient process and is conducted with the patient under general anesthesia. The timing of surgery depends on several factors, including the complexity of the incision, the general reduction technique, and finally, how much reduction is required. The areola and nipple area repositioning is also a factor. For most patients, liposuction is necessary for fat and tissue elimination to reduce the breast size. During the private consultation, all of these aspects are addressed with Dr. Canales or Dr. Furnas. Scarring is also scrupulously examined and talked through as it is likely to occur. However, surgical skill and advanced techniques have led to a noticeable reduction in the visibility of scarring. Based on the intricacy of the size and overall reduction, either an inverted-T or a straight line (vertical) incision will be incorporated. Breast fat and tissue will then be removed, and the existing skin and tissue will be pulled tight and secured.

What to Expect

Here’s what to expect when you undergo our breast reduction in Northern California.

After the Treatment

Once surgery has been completed, you will be monitored closely in our comfortable recovery facility and then discharged home to begin the healing process. A small, tube-like draining device is usually inserted near the incision area to reduce bleeding and swelling. A compression bra will be put in place for a few days that will boost blood circulation to the breasts during the immediate recovery.

In a month or so, the breasts will position themselves and settle, and the post-surgery effects will diminish. The vast majority of patients at Plastic Surgery Associates of Santa Rosa say they feel lighter, relieved, and more reassured. Following surgical breast reduction, you can enjoy the clothes you could not wear before and feel enthusiastic with your new shape. Keep in mind, it is important to maintain a healthy body weight so the outcomes are not affected in a negative way.

Breast Reduction

I recently got a breast augmentation and it was the best decision I ever made. Dr. Furnas and her team are amazing – they listened to every concern and question I had and made me feel extremely comfortable with the whole procedure. I was truly impressed by how smoothly the entire process played out – from pre-op to recovery, they made it so easy and pain-free for me and I couldn’t be happier with the results. I highly recommend PSA to anyone considering any kind of procedure – their work speaks for itself!

I can’t say enough about Dr. Canales and his fabulous staff! From my consultation visit (with the amazing Keri!) to my post op appointment, I have been blown away by the care I received. They allowed me to feel safe and confident in having surgery. I had complete trust in Dr.Canales and his team. As an RN I’ve met countless surgeons, but Dr. Canales stands out amongst them. He is personable, kind and a master at his craft. My breast augmentation results have far exceeded my expectations. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! You all are amazing!

How much does breast reduction surgery cost?

Your cost for breast reduction surgery can be reviewed with Dr. Canales or Dr. Furnas in your consultation. Typically breast reduction surgery costs between $10,000 and $14,000. This price includes facility fees, anesthesia, and more. When they have met with you and created your treatment plan, it is easier to calculate exact costs. Reduction surgery usually leads to a dramatic improvement in all aspects of life, which is why our staff will help you find low-interest financing to make your treatment easier to afford.

Will my nipples be moved?

Usually, the nipples and areola will be moved up to a central position during breast reduction surgery. The vast majority of patients retain nipple sensation. If a very large amount of tissue and skin needs to be removed, your nipple-areola may be cut out and moved. Our plastic surgeons will select an incision technique so the nipple and areola are easy to move higher. It’s also possible to perform an areolar reduction to reduce the size of the areolas. Your options will be explained in your consultation before our plastic surgeons help you choose the best plan to meet your goals.

Can I breastfeed after a breast reduction?

Reduction surgery can affect breastfeeding. Although some women can still breastfeed after a surgical reduction, other women cannot. It’s difficult to know whether your breast reduction will interfere with breastfeeding.  Dr. Canales and Dr. Furnas swill review  breastfeeding after breast reduction at the time of your consultation.

Can my breasts regrow after surgery?

Following reduction surgery, your breasts will be smaller . However dramatic weight increases could lead to regrowth of the breasts. This is why it is better to be at a healthy weight prior to your surgery that you can easily maintain. In your consultation, we will discuss the best ways to prepare for your reduction and what you can do after to help make sure your results last.
