Plastic Surgery Aesthetics: Surgical and Nonsurgical Beauty Treatments in Santa Rosa

The board-certified plastic surgeons at Plastic Surgery Associates of Santa Rosa perform hundreds of surgical beauty treatments for patients from Northern California and beyond every year. In the US alone, more than 15 million Americans undergo some kind of cosmetic surgery procedure each year. Whether reconstructive or for aesthetic reasons, people of all ages, genders, and means opt for surgical solutions.

Nonsurgical beauty treatments from physician-supervised medical spas, like Allegro Medspa of Santa Rosa, have grown rapidly in popularity as an alternative to plastic surgery. As practitioners of both plastic surgery and med spa treatments, we understand how and when to use these different approaches to meet your aesthetic goals.

What are the most common plastic surgery procedures?

Dr. Furnas, Dr. Canales, and Dr. Culbertson are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery to perform the complex and delicate procedures associated with cosmetic surgery. Their skills allow them to address conditions such as:

  • Sagging Skin
  • Excess Body Fat
  • Small Breasts
  • Uneven Breasts
  • Large Breasts
  • Loose Thigh Skin
  • Uneven, Small Buttocks
  • Undersized Chin
  • Nose Size/Shape
  • Loose Facial skin
  • Vaginal or Labial Concerns

Here are the most common procedures we perform at our Santa Rosa plastic surgery aesthetic center.

plastic surgery aesthetics includes breast implants

Breast augmentation

Breast augmentation, through implants or fat transfer, changes women’s lives every day with increased confidence and comfort in their appearance. This enhancement surgery improves breast shape and size, and it results in a gorgeous and youthful outcome. Our Northern California plastic surgeons are experienced in implementing this treatment and perform numerous breast augmentations every year.

Breast lifts with or without implants

Time, genetics, weight, and child-bearing all take a toll on the connective tissues in the skin of a woman’s breasts. Heavy, sagging breasts can be uncomfortable and make some people unhappy with their appearance. Mastopexy (known as a breast lift) redefines the breasts by trimming away loose skin and surgically tightening the existing tissue to result in a more youthful and healthier look. Advancements in mastopexy techniques have made this cosmetic surgery so effective and successful that statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons show nearly a 70% increase in demand since 2000.

Surgical and nonsurgical butt lifts

Having loose or wrinkled skin on or under your rear end can be discouraging, especially for those who diet and exercise regularly. A surgical butt lift removes excess stretched skin and tightens the rest. Patients get a plumper backside in a more lifted position with taut skin underneath.

The talented plastic surgeons at Plastic Surgery Associates also perform a less invasive approach to a tauter backside. The Brazilian butt lift, one of the fastest growing cosmetic surgeries in the U.S., uses your own fat to add volume to the buttocks area and create the desired look. The procedure requires careful and precise fat transfer via liposuction of one area of your body and injecting the purified fat into your derriere. When dealing with Brazilian butt lift fat transfers, you need a plastic surgeon with an artful eye, a careful hand, and years of training and experience.

Chin and cheek augmentation

Chin enhancement surgery (or chin augmentation) is a highly sought-after cosmetic treatment that improves the appearance of the jawline and chin for patients who are unhappy with their look. Whether you want to build a diminutive chin with an implant or decrease a substantial one, our experienced plastic surgeons can bring your vision to life.

We perform cheek augmentation to create a fuller facial contour for those who feel their cheeks make them look older. We use either silicone cheek implants or a fat transfer to achieve cheek augmentation. Dr. Canales or Dr. Furnas can talk about both choices and help you decide which will be the best match for your needs and goals.

The best plastic surgeons in Santa Rosa

Most doctors have at least some training in cosmetic surgery, so the credentials of your plastic surgeon are paramount. Make sure your plastic surgeon is certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery, and not a sound-alike board. The three plastic surgeons at Plastic Surgery Associates of Santa Rosa have incredible skill and experience.

Meet our team of Northern California plastic surgeons

Dr. Heather Furnas

Dr. Heather Furnas is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and has been in practice for almost 30 years. Dr. Furnas served as a Clinical Instructor in surgery at Harvard Medical School and currently serves as Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor of Plastic Surgery at Stanford University.

A few of her most popular procedures include: mommy makeovers, eyelid lifts, facelifts, tummy tucks, and labiaplasty/vaginal rejuvenation.

Dr. Francisco Canales

As a board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Francisco Canales specializes in aesthetic services for men and women. Prior to establishing himself in Santa Rosa, he began a private practice in Boston, MA. Additionally, he worked as a faculty member at Harvard Medical School in the division of plastic surgery. Upon moving to Sonoma County, Dr. Canales was appointed the chief of plastic surgery at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital and the chief of surgery at Warrack Hospital.

Dr. Canales earned his medical degree from the Stanford University School of Medicine. With a particular interest in plastic surgery, he completed additional surgical training and a plastic surgery residency at Stanford University Hospital.

Dr. Eric Culbertson

Dr. Eric Culbertson is double board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery. Specializing in cosmetic surgery of the face and body, Dr. Culbertson completed training specifically in aesthetic surgery during his fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern, which is only offered to one applicant per year and has repeatedly been ranked the top-ranked plastic surgery program in the country.

During his plastic surgery training and aesthetic fellowship, Dr. Culbertson learned modern and advanced techniques in both surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures, including the latest in facelifts, rhinoplasty, breast augmentation, drainless abdominoplasty, liposuction and other body contouring techniques including fat grafting and BBLs.

Any great plastic surgeon understands their patients have unique desires and expectations and will strive to achieve natural but dramatic results. Our years of experience taught us how plastic surgery results truly enhance and reinforce our patients’ identity, rather than changing them. Don’t settle for a plastic surgeon in Santa Rosa who is not willing to thoroughly discuss your concerns and options or who pushes you toward treatments you aren’t interested in. You should leave your plastic surgery consultation feeling informed, comfortable, and hopeful!

But what if you’re not certain you’re ready for a permanent change, or your surgeon recommends med spa treatment as a better route for your goals?

What is a medical spa treatment?

Med spa treatments are minimally invasive or non-invasive aesthetic treatments. Many medical spa treatments focus on similar concerns as plastic surgery, but there are some services that treat things we cannot accomplish through surgery alone.

Skin resurfacing med spa treatments

Procedures like facelifts provide amazing results for those who want to fight wrinkles and sagging skin, but what about those with sun damage or hyperpigmentation? Treatments like laser skin resurfacing, microdermabrasion, and chemical peels refinish the surface of your skin with new, healthy skin cells. This leaves a brighter, smoother complexion.

Regenerative treatments

Regenerative med spa treatments target deeper in your skin, encouraging cellular turnover and boosting collagen production. Microneedling with radiofrequency, intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy, and certain laser treatments affect your skin on a molecular level. These allow for continuous improvement to your skin via increased collagen, a key protein for the structure of your skin.

Body sculpting via building muscle

EMSCULPT NEO has vaulted to the top of many “favorite med spa treatments” lists. Medical spa body contouring procedures traditionally eliminate fat through methods like cryolipolysis or targeted radiofrequency. With EMSCULPT NEO, not only are fat cells reduced but muscles are strengthened and toned. Using high intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM®) energy we strengthen and tone the muscles in the abdomen, buttocks, thighs, arms, and calves.

A summary of nonsurgical vs surgical procedures

The biggest difference between surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures is that all surgical procedures require some form of anesthetic and some type of incision into the skin.

Nonsurgical procedures can be minimally or noninvasive. Minimally invasive nonsurgical treatments include things like dermal filler or Botox injections and microneedling. Noninvasive treatments include body sculpting and various facials, to name a few.

They achieve many of the same goals, though at different paces and through different means. Med spas’ nonsurgical treatments can kill fat cells, rejuvenate skin from the inside out, and even strengthen muscle. Surgical procedures can create permanent augmentation or reduction of features and offer anti-aging and body sculpting results far more quickly than at a med spa.
